Trainers and Rollers

Having access to an indoor bicycle trainer is a great way to maintain your fitness through winter while catching up on your favorite show or audiobook. You can ride in the comfort of your own home to achieve fitness, particularly over the winter months.  Come next February after the winter break your fitness will have the edge on your fellow riders and you will have the best cycling year ever.

Trainers are not a replacement for Outdoor Training, they are an enhancement to fitness.  You still have to cycle in groups to learn the discipline of Road Cycling - how to corner, brake and correctly position yourself on the road but you will enhance your fitness and pedalling skills if you put enough time and thought into your indoor training.

The top brand of trainers in the world is Tacx.  The Tacx Blue Twist is currently in stock at Cahill Cycles and costs €135.00. It has 2x8 permanent magnets but does not have any cable from the trainer to handlebar.  It is quite useful if you wish to develop your pedalling skills.  If used each evening to a training plan it will give you the desired fitness levels that you want to achieve.

Other trainers in stock are the Blue Matic at €165.00 has a 10 position handlebar resistance lever.  This gives you the option of adjusting the resistance as you are training.  For example you could get a program on the internet called “Sufferfest” and increase the resistance as the course gets tougher.  There are courses in Sufferfest that imitate the toughest stages on the Tour De France.  The Blue Motion which sells at 190.00 is a more powerful trainer with greater resistance and slightly smoother.

Rollers

The Tacx Antares is a bicycle Roller.  Rollers are for the more adventurous rider.  Rollers have 2 wheels on the rear which your back wheel sits on The front wheel rests on the single front roller . The front roller is connected to the rear roller by means of a rubber band.  As the rear wheel turns its roller this belt makes the front roller turn.  The bicycle can then be steered within the width of the roller in a similar fashion to it being ridden on the road.

Some people ask whether a roller is a better buy than a trainer? The roller will definitely improve your form and smoothness while cycling whereas the trainer allows for a higher intensity of riding since it requires no mental effort to stay upright.

It takes great skill to stay upright on a roller.  The trick is to hold onto a side object or place your bike within the frame of a door as you try to gain balance and momentum.  As you disengage from your prop and cycle solely on the roller, you must not decrease speed but maintain total concentration and a steady rhythm. Ensure to look straight ahead as this will help balance.

Place the roller in a cool room while training as you will not have the slip-stream of the wind to cool you down.  you could also have a full length mirror in front of you to observe your form.

Cahill Cycles have in stock the Tacx Blue Antares at €185.00

Virtual Reality Trainers

The Tacx Flow is in stock at Cahill Cycles and sells at €520.00.  It is advisable to buy one of these virtual reality trainers from a shop that offers help in setting it up because if you link the machine to an inadequate computer in setting it up you will have great difficulty in changing the licence from the wrong computer to a computer that matches the machine.

When you have this installed in your exercise room there is nothing like it.  You can compete with world pro cyclists or a friend in Australia who also is using Tacx.

The Virtual Reality trainer comes with a VR interface, VR steering frame and Tacx trainer software.  There is also a 1yr. licence included for web racing

Training Programme for Indoor Cycling

I outline three different programmes for indoor training preferably on a trainer, where the back wheel is fixed at the axle.  You do not have to concentrate on balance which would be the case on a roller.  You should perform these training exercises as close as possible to your maximum heart rate (To determine MHR you need a heart rate monitor and a test either carried out by your gym trainer or in accordance with the systematic rules which can be studied on the internet).

Each of these exercises will take approximately 45 minutes

1) Power & Strength Session 1

15 minutes warm up - Increasing Intensity

5 x (4min high intensity + 2min low intensity)

5 Minute Cool Down

Do not ride to complete exhaustion.  In the resting periods you should aim to cycle at 60% of MHR and in the High Intensity period you should push yourself very hard

2) Power & Strength Session 2

15 Minutes Warm Up - Increasing Intensity

The Circuit is:

5 x (40 sec very high intensity, 20 sec low intensity

3 minute Cool Down

Repeat circuit three times

3) Anaerobic Session 3

12 minute warm up - increasing intensity

5 x (60sec. maximum intensity + 6 min. recovery)

If you are doing this exercise effectively, you will find it very exhausting, so therefore you should only attempt it to prepare yourself for a race.
